BROKEN THINGS SERIES

BROKEN THINGS SERIES

The Broken Things Series marked my first significant exploration into wood carving and sculptural form, and represents an important turning point in my artistic practice. Created during the extended COVID-19 lockdowns while teaching Visual Arts from home, the series emerged from witnessing the emotional effects of isolation, uncertainty and disconnection - both within my own life and among the students I worked with each day. Rather than documenting a specific historical event, these sculptures reflect the universal experiences of vulnerability, resilience and the human need for connection.

Each hand-carved figure embodies quiet emotional states rather than literal narratives. Through simplified forms, subtle gestures and expressive posture, the works encourage viewers to recognise aspects of themselves within the characters, inviting empathy, contemplation and personal interpretation.

The title Broken Things refers not only to the figures themselves, but to the emotional fractures that shape every life. Like repaired objects that continue to bear the marks of their history, these sculptures suggest that our imperfections are not flaws to conceal, but experiences that contribute to who we become.

Although one of the earliest series within my practice, Broken Things introduced ideas that continue to define my work today: transformation, storytelling and the belief that overlooked objects - and overlooked emotions - hold extraordinary value. Through careful craftsmanship and quiet symbolism, the series celebrates the possibility that healing, renewal and hope can emerge from even the most difficult circumstances.

To date, the Broken Things Series has evolved through three distinct editions, each expanding upon its central themes while introducing new characters and narratives. A fourth edition is currently in development, continuing the series' exploration of vulnerability, resilience and transformation
